The question of whether Vance was dead or not became more than academic when he found himself in a bathtub up to his chin in ice water like some forgotten cocktail garnish, a demonic woman standing over him, and no memory of how he got there.

The City & The City

Inspector Tyador Borlú of the Extreme Crime Squad finds deadly conspiracies beneath a seemingly routine murder. From the decaying Beszel, he joins detective Qussim Dhatt in rich vibrant Ul Qoma, and both are enmeshed in a sordid underworld. Rabid nationalists are intent on destroying their neighboring city, and unificationists dream of dissolving the two into one.

Pick Comment:
It's difficult to express how much I admired The City & The City (2009) by China Miéville for creating an interesting and, to me, new perspective in describing setting where the characters deliberately and consciously "un-see" part of their environment. The setup is where there are two cities co-existing in the same topological space where some parts of the two cities are explicitly distinct with other parts "cross-hatched" or existing in both cities. Interestingly, it doesn't seem to ever be conclusively shown that the non-overlapping sections truly co-exist in the same topological space. (e)
