The question of whether Vance was dead or not became more than academic when he found himself in a bathtub up to his chin in ice water like some forgotten cocktail garnish, a demonic woman standing over him, and no memory of how he got there.

Story structure

Story structure (or narrative structure) is about story and plot: the content of a story and the form used to tell the story. Story refers to the dramatic action as it might be described in chronological order. Plot refers to how the story is told. Story is about trying to determine the key conflicts, main characters, setting and events. Plot is about how, and at what stages, the key conflicts are set up and resolved. I'm going to proposed that the definition of story structure (and go and look for supporting or countering arguments) to mean the mapping of the purely linear sequence of words into a sequence of events and the viewpoints associated with those events. For instance, the structure of P. G. Wodehouse's "Goodbye to All Cats" is a frame of one member of the Drone's Club telling the story of a linear sequence of events of Freddy Widgeon's visit to Matcham Scratchings.

  • linear
  • nonlinear
  • flashback
  • frame
  • episodic
  • reversed
  • parallel
    • converging
    • diverging
    • overlapping
    • alternating
