The question of whether Vance was dead or not became more than academic when he found himself in a bathtub up to his chin in ice water like some forgotten cocktail garnish, a demonic woman standing over him, and no memory of how he got there.

“My name’s Vance Coreman and I see things that other people don’t.”
The question of whether Vance was dead or not became more than academic when he found himself in a bathtub up to his chin in ice water like some forgotten cocktail garnish, a demonic woman standing over him, and no memory of how he got there. But that question was one among legion, because what memories he did have were as comforting as a blackjack in the dark. So it wasn’t surprising when he found out that trouble was his business, and business was kicking his door down. (e)

Chapter 3 — The Last Thing I Remember

The memory bursts through, soaking me with fear. My body floats in water with only my face above the surface. My belt winds around my head, allowing me to breath the chill air. I am looking up. My vision narrows to a tunnel as my heart pounds, the thumping rush of blood in my ears drowns out the ringing. Something red flickers and dances above me like a forest fire seen through a frozen waterfall. It is here. I can run no more.

The ember-bright lights press into the ice above me, drawing closer.

Had I miscalculated? I fear what I must do.

The glowing red tips pierce the ice.

The fear has become a desperate terror. I must do it now.

The sparks that make up the thing swarm through the growing holes. The space above me fills with crimson points of light. The air grows sauna hot.

I can barely draw a steaming, choking breath, yet I hesitate. My lips move, “Fear is the mind killer. I am the mind killer.”

The nearest spark settles toward my face.

I squeeze my eyes shut. They won’t get it. Death will be a release. A white light burns through my mind leaving an impenetrable dark in its wake, devoid of sight and sound...sensation...meaning.
