As an avid user of LibreOffice ( see Authoring Novels with LibreOffice ), I'm happy to relay then news that LibreOffice development continues move along at a rapid clip with the recent (Jan. 31st, 2018) of version 6.0. There are number of great additions and fixes (see below for a partial list), prime among them (well, for me, at least) is the toolbar layout sidebar has been fixed so that it doesn't always revert to Properties (as I nearly always want it to display Styles and Formatting).

A few of the improvements are:

  • In Writer, a Form menu has been added giving the ability to design and create standards-compliant PDF forms
  • Dictionary / spell-checking improvements using a "Grammar By" mechanism (i.e. word spelling template, such as "crowdfund" variations based on "fund")
  • Epub export
  • OpenPGP keys can be used to sign ODF documents
  • Calc exports images based on selected cells
  • Many improvements in import filters
