One of the aspects of writing that I find most intriguing and a great deal of fun is when a story takes an unanticipated turn and I find myself exploring new aspects of character, plot, setting, etc. Recently, I have “discovered” just such a swerving off into new territory in the writing of “Winters’ Unexpected Arrival”.  Twice.  Yesterday I had a flash about how to frame WUA and during the several days prior to this an ancient structure, which I am calling a “dark-age keep”, appeared in the narrative and has been taking on an increasingly important role in the main character’s survival.  Additionally, this dark-age keep has become the basis for exploring the whole dark-age / Transhuman Echo mechanism of the Chronicles from the Nexus.

I previously reported that it seemed like I was getting to the end of the WUA story earlier than I had expected.  This is no longer true as I am pushing three-quarters of my word-count goal and I am fairly sure that I will write another thousand or so words before I wrap up the barf phase and the polish phase will add another ten percent, so it is looking like WUA will be around 7500 to 8000 words.  I think that one of the reasons that I was feeling like the story was wrapping up was that I was pretty much hitting all the points that I covered in the synopsis.  But then I found myself writing about the dark-age keep and introducing a framing device for the story.  Which is a good thing.
